Poverty Alleviation: What Is the Focus?

We should take priority this year and next in what the President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has emphasized during the two sessions for Gansu Delegation on fighting against poverty.

In recent years, we have made decisive progress in fighting against poverty in Gansu Province, but there is still a long way to go. We should set priorities on how to continuously take the remaining rural poor out of poverty as this is crucial to win the critical battle of targeted poverty alleviation. At the same time, as for all the poor and impoverished counties lifted out of poverty, we still need to address such issues as weak foundation, fake effects, unsound mechanisms and insufficient momentum on poverty reduction. Especially in impoverished areas, for the absolute poor and on weakness in poverty relief, we should look to continuous efforts to fight against poverty and keep the poor and the counties which were got rid of poverty from going back to poverty. We should attach great importance to and keep a firm hand in rectifying malpractices such as fake achievements, income-accounting, indexes-based standards and other formalities in poverty relief. Guided by Xi Jinping’s Economic Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we should incorporate the targeted poverty alleviation into the “Eight Requirements”raised by Xi Jinping for Gansu by setting up a long-term mechanism for targeted poverty alleviation. We need perseverance in the fight against poverty as there are only two years left for the country to meet its goal of eradicating extreme poverty by 2020. There should be no retreat until a complete victory is won.
